11/05/2011 | Field Hockey
Straniero had not scored a collegiate goal in 70 career games entering this weekend's Atlantic 10 Tournament, but she was brought up front as a secret weapon on penalty corners and blasted her first collegiate goal in Friday's semifinal win over La Salle.
In the title game Saturday, Straniero rocketed a shot from the top of the circle that beat the Temple keeper 8:23 into the match
The Spiders won their second Atlantic 10 Championship in the last three years and improved to 7-1 in Atlantic 10 title games.
Richmond has won seven of the last 10 Atlantic 10 Regular-Season and Tournament titles and has a 72-10 record against Atlantic 10 teams over the last 10 years, including a 57-7 record in Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season play.
Richmond dominated Temple just as they had dominated La Salle on Friday, out-shooting the Owls 18-2. Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen did all she could to keep the Spiders from pouring it on, but Straniero's goal proved more than enough as Richmond possessed the ball for the vast majority of the game.Straniero was joined on the All-Tournament Team by sophomore Chelsea Davies, freshman Rebecca Barry and junior Catherine Ostoich. Davies scored two goals in Richmond's semifinal win and Barry had one goal against the Explorers.
Richmond will head directly to the West Coast to play Cal in an NCAA Tournamnet Play-In Game on Tuesday.
