Spiders Fall to Rams in Black & Blue Classic
12/10/2011 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Cedrick Lindsay scored a career-high 22 points, but Richmond could not overcome a VCU second-half surge and fell 73-51 to the cross-town rival Rams in Friday's Black & Blue Classic at the Siegel Center.
Lindsay, who opened the game on a 7-for-7 clip from the field, shot 7-for-10 for the game and 7-for-8 from the line. He added four rebounds and a team-high three assists.
Scoring in double figures for the eighth time in nine games this season, freshman Kendall Anthony finished the night with 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting. Senior Darrius Garrett came away with four blocks on the defensive end.
The Spiders (6-3) trailed by as few as two points midway through the second half, but were sunk in large part due to 17-of-47 (36.2%) shooting from the floor and after going 4-of-20 (20%) from long range. Ball control was also a factor, as the team turned in a season-high 16 turnovers in the loss.
VCU (6-3) ended the game on a 26-6 run and committed just seven turnovers on its way to the win. The Rams were led by senior Bradford Burgess, who came off the bench to score 14 points and haul in a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Rob Brandenberg also finished with 14 points and junior Troy Daniels added 13 tallies to join Burgess in double figures.
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday when they host Iona at 3 p.m. in the Robins Center.
