Richmond Second-Half Rally Falls Short Against Gaels

UNIVERISTY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After being down by as many as 18 points late in the second half, Richmond staged a valiant 23-14 rally down the stretch before ultimately falling, 88-79, to Iona on Wednesday at the Robins Center.
Senior Darrius Garrett had a breakout performance for the Spiders, finishing with 13 points on an efficient 5-of-8 outing from the floor and 11 boards en route to recording his first career double-double. He would add four of the Spiders five blocks on the defensive end.
After coming away with a career-high 22 points at VCU on Friday, sophomore Cedrick Lindsay continued his stellar sophomore campaign with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a 3-for-6 clip from long range, and a career-best eight assists on Wednesday.
With his 18 points on the afternoon, freshman Kendall Anthony finished in double figures for the ninth time this season, while junior Darien Brothers chipped in 11 points.
Richmond (6-4) was 27-of-59 (46%) from the field and 10-of-24 (42%) from behind the arc against the Gaels. The Spiders would also continue their solid shooting at the stripe, going 15-for-18 (83%) from the line in the contest.
One of the nation's highest-octane offenses, Iona (8-2) shot 37-of-63 (59%) from the field and 8-of-14 (57%) from distance. The Gaels totaled an impressive 25 assists while edging the Spiders on the boards by a 34-30 margin.
Senior Scott Machado led the way for Iona, scoring 13 points and matching a career high with 15 assists. Four other Gaels joined him in double figures, including senior Mike Glover with a game-high 24 points.
The Spiders return to the road on Saturday when they visit Bucknell at 7 p.m.
