Spiders Gut Out Win Over Cross-Town Rival VCU, 78-77

RICHMOND, Va. -- Genevieve Okoro scored a career-high 21 points as the Spiders clipped VCU, 78-77 for its fourth straight win in the series.
Richmond improved to 6-1 overall, while VCU fell to 3-3.
VCU had a 73-65 lead with 4:48 left but the Spiders scored nine straight points to take the lead, 74-73, after a clutch three-pointer by Keri Soppe in the corner at the 2:21 mark.
Oliver scored the last four points for Richmond, which proved to be enough.
The competitive, basket-for-basket contest had the score switch hands 10 times with 17 lead changes. Richmond had the largest lead, a nine-point advantage in the first half.
Okoro posted her second-straight double-double, a career-high 21 points and had 13 rebounds. Oliver also had 21 points, while Rachael Bilney contributed 10 points.
Richmond, the top team in the country in free-throw percentage, went 22-for-25 for the line with Okoro a perfect 9-for-9. Not to be outdone, Oliver went 6-for-6.
Richmond shot at a 48 percent clip, while VCU went 41 percent from the field.
Courtney Hurt scored a game-high 25 points for VCU and pulled down 10 boards. Richmond's bench outscored VCU 14-4.
Richmond won its fourth-straight over its River City foe and have taken 11 of the last 13 meetings.
