UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Darien Brothers lit it up for a career night from long range to lead Richmond past in-state rival Old Dominion in a 90-82 overtime thriller on Tuesday at the Robins Center.
After the Spiders took a 40-32 lead into the half, a back-and-forth battle ensued for much of the second as the Monarchs would fight back for a 59-55 lead with 6:17 remaining in regulation. The Spiders, who rallied thanks in large part to Brothers' 10 points down the stretch, led 72-69 with :09 to play before ODU senior Kent Bazemore drained a desperation trey with two ticks left to square the score and send the game into overtime.
After sinking his seventh three-pointer to open the overtime period, Brothers went 2-of-2 from the floor and drained 6-of-8 free throws to lead the Spiders to victory. They never trailed in the extra session.
Brothers, who finished the game with a career-high 38 points and the most tallies for a Spider since Greg Stevenson's 38 points in 2001, shot 9-for-15 from the field, including a 7-of-11 clip from behind the arc and 13-of-14 shooting at the line. His seven three-pointers, the most for a Spider since David Gonzalvez' seven treys in 2007, also equaled a career-best while his 38 points represent the second-most in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Sophomore Derrick Williams finished with career-high 18 points on a perfect 4-of-4 outing from the floor that also included a game-opening trey. Classmate Cedrick Lindsay joined him in double figures with 13 points to go with four assists, while senior Darrius Garrett came up just one point shy of his third career double-double with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. He also came away with a season-best eight blocks in a dominant defensive display for the Spiders.
Richmond went 25-of-42 (59.5%) from the floor and 11-20 (55%) from long range in the win while finishing the night 29-of 39 (74.4%) at the line. The Spiders held the Monarchs to 3-of-12 (25%) shooting from behind the arc and just 3-of-9 (33.3%) shooting in overtime.
Bazemore scored 20 points on a 7-of-15 night from the field to lead the Monarchs. Classmate Chris Cooper was just behind with 19 tallies, while freshman Dimitri Batten finished with 13 points and fellow newcomer Richard Ross grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Spiders head to the opposite coast for a 10:30 p.m. matchup with UCLA on Friday at the LA Sports Arena. The game will be aired live on Prime Ticket.
