Dec. 30, 2011: Practice Begins and Interesting Conversations Ensue
After a morning long-course practice and afternoon short-course practice, our first official day of training trip is now in the books! During the second practice, most of us did a long backstroke set. Doing backstroke outside can pose a challenge if you're not used to it. There are no lines on the ceiling to use as a guideline and the wind often moves the flags. Nonetheless, I think we did a good job and, hey, we got some good tan lines in the process! Swimming in the sun really does make a hard practice seem more manageable.
One thing I really enjoy about training trip is being able to interact with the different swimmers and coaches we meet at the pool. We are currently sharing the pool with another college team, and I found the men's team's commentary very intriguing. During a hard set, a guy in the next lane over swam into the wall and announced, "I may have just pooped."
We also got some comic relief while listening to another team's sarcastic coach, who told one of his swimmers, "Congratulations, you are now swimming at the level of a six year old!"
In terms of our condo, we are currently separated from our original roommate, Jill, because we were given a weird number of condos. So, Alaina, Allison and I prepared a scrumptious dinner that involved a lot of microwaving. I've come a long way in terms of my cooking skills since last year, but I still have some work to do. There was a slight issue when Alaina failed to set a place at the table for our honorary roommate, Dingbang. The problem was quickly resolved, however, and Allison forgave Alaina.
Our conversation at dinner somehow led to what we wanted to be when we were little. I learned that Alaina wanted to be a firefighter. Allison said that she had first wanted to be an artist but then decided she wanted to work at a gas station. Why? Because she likes the smell of gasoline and wanted to be surrounded by candy.
As for myself, I wanted to be a swim coach or celebrity. So, not quite as interesting as Allison's, but I am still banking on the whole celebrity thing...
