CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kevin Anderson scored 20 points, including the 2,000th of his career as Richmond defeated Charlotte 72-59 Saturday.
Anderson passed the 2,000-point plateau with 7:36 left in the second half when Francis-Cedric Martel grabbed a steal and threw a crosscourt pass to Anderson streaking up the left sideline. Anderson caught the pass on the left wing and made a reverse layup to give him 2,001 career points.
Anderson, who is third on Richmond's all-time scoring list, finished the game with 20 points and now sits at 2,009 career points.
He became the second Spider to reach 2,000 career points on Saturday. Richmond women's guard Brittani Shells and Anderson both needed 11 points to reach 2,000 and both passed the milestone on a reverse layup in the second half.
This is the first time that a male and female player from the same school reached 2,000 career points in the same day.
Justin Harper scored 22 points, making 8-of-14 field goals, including 3-of-5 three-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds.
Martel scored 11 points, making 3-of-5 field goals, grabbing five rebounds and swiping four steals.
Richmond improved to 9-3 on the road this season, including 6-1 in A-10 road games. The Spiders have won 15 of the last 18 A-10 road games.
The Spiders won for the fourth-straight year at Charlotte's Halton Arena and have won seven of the last eight meetings with the 49ers.
Richmond returns to action on Wednesday at Saint Joseph's with a chance to clinch a bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the third time in the last four years.
