SHORT HOPS
The Richmond baseball team is home for the third consecutive weekend, hosting the Quinnipiac Bobcats in a three-game set that begins Friday at Pitt Field at 2:30 p.m.
The series continues Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be live on SpiderTV, with Gametracker coverage also available throughout the series at RichmondSpiders.com.
Freshman RHP Andrew Brockett (0-2, 4.86 ERA) gets the nod Friday, with senior RHP Anthony Cafagna (1-2, 4.76 ERA) on the bump Saturday and sophomore RHP Jacob Mayers (1-1, 2.86 ERA) working Sunday.
Richmond went unbeaten in a mid-week home-and-home versus Mason, winning Tuesday's game at Pitt Field 5-2 and tying Wednesday's tilt in Fairfax 8-8. The Spiders scored three times in the ninth Wednesday to force extras and the game was called by darkness after 10 innings.
Jacob Mayers was four-for-nine at the plate in the two-game series, while junior CF Robby Massar and freshman SS Mike Small each drove in three runs. Massar's two-run single in the ninth Wednesday tied the game at 8-8 and he homered Tuesday, while Small had a two-RBI single in Tuesday's game.
Richmond threw a pair of southpaws at Mason Tuesday, with sophomore Shawn O'Neill going seven strong innings (6 hits, 2 runs, 5 Ks) to get the win, while senior Daniel Clark fired no-hit ball with four Ks over the final two innings to get his first save.
Quinnipiac comes to Richmond at 2-1, having split a doubleheader with Marshall (8-3 and 3-7) and beating Ball State 5-4 last weekend -- all three games were played in Myrtle Beach. Senior Ben Farina hit .429 with two RBI, a double and three steals and was named the Northeast Conf. Player of the Week.
