WILLIAMSBURG - Phil Ruzbarsky drove in the winning run in the eighth inning, while Bret Williams and Daniel Clark combined to hold William & Mary to just a run as Richmond slipped by the Tribe, 2-1, Tuesday night at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg.
Williams gave the Spiders seven strong innings, scattering just three hits as the sophomore lefty improved to 2-0. Senior Daniel Clark closed it out, firing two scoreless frames with two punchouts and no walks to claim his second save.
Mike Mergenthaler finished two-for-four and his run in the fourth inning allowed the Spiders (6-10-2) to take a 1-0 lead. After Mergenthaler led off the inning with a single, he advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, then scored on another Tribe error.
William & Mary (6-13) drew even in the fifth when Devin White doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Kevin Nutter's squeeze bunt.
In the eighth, Richmond took the lead for good after loading the bases with one out. Ruzbarsky grounded a ball to second, but beat out the Tribe's double-play attempt and Mike Small scored from third.
Tribe reliever Reid Killen was on the hook for the go-ahead run and was tagged the loss (1-1).
Richmond, which has won two straight, returns to action this weekend with a three-game series versus Maryland-Eastern Shore at Pitt Field. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m.
