SHORT HOPS
Looking to extend a season-best six-game winning streak, the Richmond baseball team welcomes Northeastern on the Spiders' final non-conference weekend of the season. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m.
The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes Sunday at noon. Gametracker is available for all three games, but SpiderTV live video is not available.
Rookie RHP Andrew Brockett (3.90 ERA, 1-2) gets the nod for the third-consecutive Friday and is looking for his second-straight win. Fellow rookie LHP Chris Bates is slated for Saturday with sophomore LHP Shawn O'Neill in line on Sunday.
The Spiders pounded out 15 hits and got eight strong innings on the mound from sophomore LHP Bret Williams Tuesday at ODU as the Spiders extended their winning streak to six -- the team's longest since starting 2009 at 7-0. Williams allowed just seven hits and three runs (two earned) and improved to 3-0. Three Spider pitchers combined for seven Ks and no walks.
The Spiders have allowed just 14 earned runs over the team's last eight games (73.0 total innings) and Richmond has posted a 6-2 record in that stretch, while the ERA has dropped from 4.65 to 3.59. In addition, three of the staff's four saves have come in the last eight games.
As the pitching has picked over the last seven, so has the offense. The Spiders have recorded six double-digit hitting performance in this stretch, have out-scored the opposition 56-28 and the team's batting average has jumped from .277 to .293.
Senior RF Mike Mergenthaler, who entered the week leading the A-10 in total bases, ranked fourth in hits and second in doubles, had two hits at ODU and extended his hitting streak to six games.
