UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The Spiders opened its conference slate in thrilling fashion with a 10-9 win over Duquesne Friday night at Robins Stadium.
Richmond held a comfortable 7-3 lead at the break after rattling off six unanswered goals to close the half.
Duquesne would not go quietly and scored the second frame's first three goals to get to within 8-6. Richmond would get an insurance goal from Mary Flowers who sprinted the field after a draw control and lasered the shot past the Dukes' keeper.
Duquesne responded with another three goal surge to knot the game at 9-9 with 9:17 remaining. Danielle Schaevitz provided the gutsy go-ahead goal a minute later the Spiders would not relinquish.
Richmond's stellar defense held the Duquesne offense scoreless for the last three minutes of the game.
Schaevitz led Richmond with a hat trick, while Anne Ryan added two tallies. Five other Spiders added a score.
Richmond dominated the draw, 14-6, and goalkeeper Victoria Roebuck had a game-high 12 saves.
The Spiders continue their homestand with St. Bonaventure Sunday at noon.
