AMHERST, Mass. -
The Spiders (8-8, 5-1) couldn't overcome a hot start by No. 15 Massachusetts (13-2, 6-0) and fell 14-4 Sunday afternoon in Amherst.
Massachusetts came out of the gate with a vengeance scoring the game's first eight goals to take a commanding 8-0 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first frame.
Richmond got on the board when Gabi Wiegand scored off a Julianne Nicola assist. The Minutewomen answered the Spider tally with three more scores to take an 11-1 lead at the half.
Richmond scored three more times in the second frame, two of which came from reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Cailtin Fifield, but it would not be enough.
The Spiders conclude regular season play at GW Friday at 4:00 p.m.
