CAMDEN, N.J. - Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year Andrew Smith held Richmond scoreless over seven innings as top-seeded Charlotte won 6-0 in a Second Round game at the 2011 A-10 Baseball Championship in Camden, N.J. The fifth-seeded Spiders will next play either tonight at 7 p.m. or Friday at 3:30 p.m.
If No. 2 Rhode Island beats No. 6 La Salle, Richmond (27-26-2) won't play again until 3:30 p.m. Friday. But should the Explorers pull the upset, the Spiders would face Dayton tonight at 7 p.m.
Junior Chris Cowell was on base twice as he had the Spiders' only hit - a second-inning single to left - and also drew a lead-off walk in the fifth.
Charlotte, ranked 28th in the nation, won its 40th game of the season (40-14) in typical 49er fashion - effective pitching and successful small-ball. Brown allowed just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts in improving to 9-4.
Corey Shaylor helped put Charlotte on the board in the third inning when he led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt took third on a passed ball and scored via Justin Roland's squeeze bunt.
A walk, a bunt single and another infield single allowed the 49ers to load the bases with no outs in the fourth and Corbin Shive came through later in the frame with a two-run double to left to make the score 3-0. Charlotte tacked on one more in the fourth and added runs in the fifth and eighth innings.
Sophomore lefty Bret Williams, who beat the 49ers in early May 3-0, fired a complete-game but was hung the tough loss (7-4) after allowing six runs (five earned) and 10 hits - three of which didn't leave the infield.
John Hamilton closed out Charlotte's 11th shutout this season by firing no-hit ball over the final two innings.
