Aging White Oak Tree At Robins Stadium To Be Removed

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - The large white oak tree that has stood for more than 100 years on the University of Richmond campus and was a cornerstone of construction at Robins Stadium will come down this summer due to its declining condition.
The tree was regarded as the oldest on campus.
"The University made a tremendous effort to save the tree during construction at Robins Stadium," said Steve Glass, the University's horticulturist and landscape manager. "But unfortunately its old age, combined with the trauma of multiple lightning strikes has resulted in decline and for safety reasons it must be removed."
Extensive efforts were made during Robins Stadium construction to maintain the tree's health, including a root invigoration program, aeration, fertilization and regular visits from a Certified Master Arborist.

In its place, the University plans to plant three loplolly pines at the Robins Stadium site, while approximately 200 seedlings from the existing white oak have been collected and will be grown for future planting on campus. The useable timber from the existing white oak will also be used for other projects on campus.
