Day 5 Recap: 2011 Training Camp
08/10/2011 | Football
Richmond was in
full pads for the first time in Training Camp Tuesday afternoon, and the
Spiders kicked off the up-tempo workout with a Richmond staple - the Spider
Drills.
The Spider
Drills is an intense segment of select practices that pits the offense versus the
defense in a three-on-three format.
It could be three offensive linemen versus three defensive linemen,
three tight ends versus three linebackers or three wideouts versus three cornerbacks. The offense has three downs to score a
10-yard touchdown, and there is a safety at the goal line that the running back
must avoid.
The grind of Training Camp continues Wednesday with the Spiders' first two-a-day. Richmond is on the grass at 8 a.m. and holds an open-to-the-public practice at Robins Stadium at 7 p.m.
Senior RB
Garrett Turner showed flashes of his speed during the team period as he chewed
up tough yards, including a 40-yard burst around the left side. Redshirt
freshman WR Stephen Barnette had another solid day, going over the middle to
make a handful of catches in heavy traffic.
On defense, big hits came from sophomore DL Kerry Wynn and sophomore DL Brandon
Scott, while redshirt freshmen LBs DeShawn Holmes and Eric Wright are
continuing to produce at a position that lost the team's two leading tacklers
from last season - Eric McBride and Patrick Weldon.
Tuesday's practice also included a review of the punt return unit, and installing the team's punt coverage.
