Day 11 Recap: 2011 Training Camp
08/16/2011 | Football
Coming off the first off-day in the Spiders' 2011 Training Camp, Richmond was back on the field for another two-a-day Monday, with both practices at Robins Stadium.
"It's always a concern how the intensity is going to be after that first off-day," said head coach Latrell Scott. "I like what I saw this morning from the guys, but didn't think we were as sharp tonight."
Richmond scrimmaged for the first time this past Saturday, and enjoyed Sunday's off-day as the team went bowling.
When the Spiders opened Training Camp on Thursday, August 4, Coach Scott challenged the incoming freshmen to come in and make an immediate impact - and many of them have embraced the challenge.
Running back Justin Grant saw significant action in Saturday's scrimmage and Rashad Ponder is making a name for himself at receiver, while both Nick Ritcher and Austin Gund were in the No. 1 unit on the offensive line on Saturday. Defensively, Aaron Roane has been working with the No. 1's at linebacker.
"These guys are having great camps," said Scott. "We have to remember they're still true freshman, so they still have a lot to learn. But these guys came to school in great shape and it'll be hard to keep them off the field this season."
Richmond is back on the practice field at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Stay tuned to RichmondSpiders.com this week as SpiderTV begins a position-by-position preview with each of the Spiders' assistant coaches.
