UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - With college football season fast approaching, University of Richmond football fans can get a jump start on the new-look Spiders with a behind-the-scenes training camp show airing on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic this August.
Chronicling the Spiders' 2011 preseason camp, the show will give fans an all-access, never-before-seen look into the inner workings of an elite college football program at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level.
"This is a unique opportunity for the University of Richmond to showcase our championship football program, our outstanding campus and give fans a better look at the day-to-day lives of our players and coaches," said head coach Latrell Scott. "We are proud to be the City of Richmond's football team and we're excited about the partnership with Comcast SportsNet to expose our program in this exclusive way."
To capitalize on the momentum created by the announcement of the show, the University of Richmond and Comcast SportsNet plan to utilize social media channels to solicit the show's name.
To submit your naming ideas, follow Spider Football on Twitter (@Spider_Football), on Facebook (search: Richmond Spiders Football) or Comcast SportsNet on Twitter (@csnwashington) and hashtag your suggestions #SpidersCSN. The show's name will be announced when Training Camp opens August 5.
The two-episode series debuts Sunday, August 21 and Monday August 22 at 9 p.m. ET, with the second episode airing Sunday, August 28 and Monday, August 29 at 9 p.m.
The full hour-long presentation re-airs Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, August 31 at 4 p.m. The network also plans to keep the show on its on-demand channel throughout the 2011 college football season.
The Spiders Training Camp show is a result of the great partnership between Richmond Athletics and Comcast SportsNet, and is being produced by two-time Emmy Award-winning 3 Penny Films, which has done similar projects for University of Miami Football, Auburn University Football, University of Maryland Football and Marquette University Basketball. Richmond is the first FCS client of 3 Penny Films.
The film crew, led by former University of Maryland and Washington Redskins place-kicker Jess Atkinson, will follow the team before, during and after each practice. The crew will also sit in on team and positional meetings, as well as a number of off-the-field activities.
Footage for the show will be shot during the first week of Richmond's 2011 Training Camp, and the Spiders will air outtakes and brief web features on SpiderTV via the athletic department's website - www.RichmondSpiders.com - throughout the season.
The University of Richmond has established itself as one of the elite programs at the Football Championship Subdivision level over the last decade, winning five conference titles, making five playoff appearances and in 2008, becoming just the second-ever private institution to claim the Division-I Football National Championship.
