Women's Lacrosse Announces 2011 Class
Head coach Stephy Samaras Mantizaras welcomes 11 newcomers to the 2011 roster. The Spiders graduated nine seniors from last year's 10-9 squad that made its second-straight A-10 title game. Samaras Mantizaras comments on each incoming freshman below.
Emily Boyce • Goalie • Middletown, Md.
Boyce was the 2011 Fredrick County Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time Monocacy Valley Athletic first team selection. Boyce was also a US Lacrosse Academic All-American."Emily is the best type of goalie, she is threat both inside and outside of the cage."
Katie Cahill • Defender • Medford, N.J.
Cahill was a NJ Olympic All Conference first team selection and played on the 2010 NJ South National tournament team. Cahill was a member of the 2010 NJ Group State 3 Champion squad and also a member of the 2011 Olympic Conference champion team. "Katie is a very solid defender. She is a defender that can lead a unit with both skill and communication."
Emily Doyle • Midfielder • Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.
Doyle was a MSG and Star Ledger Top NJ Player to Watch and a two-time BCWCA All County first team selection. Doyle was 2010 US Lacrosse All-American candidate and a two-time top-10 leading scorer in the state. "Emily is the make-it-happen type of a player. She is all over the field and takes great chances. Our mid-field unit will be excited to have Emily this year. "
Erin Marie Geoghan • Midfielder • Highland, Md.
Geoghan was a two-time All County second team selection and voted Most Outstanding Player on her high school squad. Geoghan also was a four-year starter and team captain. "Silent but deadly was a term created for Erin. Her work ethic and skill will be a great addition for us this year."
Lindsay Ford • Defender • Chatham, N.J.
Ford was a two-time All Morris County first team selection and a Star Ledger first team honoree. Ford was also an All NJAC American and All Morris County Coaches Association first team selection. "Lindsay is the do-it-all defender. She can contain, she can take the ball away and she can score. It's hard to find defenders who you can trust with the ball but Lindsey knows how to get the job done."
Anna Jeszeck • Midfielder • Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
Jeszeck was a three-time All-Section, All-League and All-Elite selection and a two-time Academic All-American. Jeszeck was named a US Lacrosse All-American her senior year and was a MSG Tri-State Varsity Midfielder first team pick. "Anna doesn't know how to stop! Her work level never falls below 100% and she uses that best in the mid-field."
Jess Miller • Midfielder • Ridgewood, N.J.
Miller was a member of the two-time New Jersey State champion team and an All-County, All-League and All-Suburban pick. Miller was a two-time point leader, starter and captain of her high school squad. "Jess is that lacrosse player that you love to watch run. She is up and down the field and she doesn't even break a sweat. Her reaction time is hard to match and when you think you have caught her, she shifts into fifth gear."
Janie Penney • Midfielder • Short Hills, N.J.
Penney was an All-Super Essex Conference and an All New Jersey Interscholastic Girls Lacrosse first team pick. Penney ranked second all-time in career points (302) and was selected to play in the US Lacrosse Senior All-Star game. "Janie will add another dimension to the draw for our team this year. She knows where to put the ball and when she has it, she knows what to do with it. She will add a new level to our transition game with her speed and deceptiveness."
Makenna Pohle • Midfielder • Scottsdale, Ariz.
Pohle was a two-time US Lacrosse All-American first team selection and a four-time Arizona All-Star high school honoree. Pohle was named one of the players to watch in the US Lacrosse Magazine and was tabbed Arizona Lacrosse Sportswoman of the Year. "A new and great style of lacrosse will come to Richmond through Makenna. Although she hasn't been playing lacrosse as long as some of our other recruits she has been able to take her raw athletic talent and showcase it through lacrosse. Although her style is sometimes unorthodox it will add the spark we need to our team this year."
Claire Yackery • Attack • Darien, Conn.
Yackery was a member of the 2011 Western New England and Founders League Champion teams. Yackery was also a senior captain and a 2010 All-American honorable mention. "Claire is a defenders nightmare. Her speed, agility and stick skills can throw off even the elite defenders. Her use of and creativity around the crease will be a great addition to our attack this year."
Bailey Zerr • Attack • Denver, Colo.
Zerr was tabbed the Denver Post All-Colorado Player of the Year after being the top scorer in the state with 113 goals. In addition, Zerr was an All-American first team, two-time All-Centennial League first team and All-Colorado first team selection as well as her team MVP and team captain. "Bailey only knows how to get the job done. She can create off ball and when she has the ball she can feed and score. Off the field she may be the silent, shy type but on the field this girl rocks!"
2012 At a Glance...
In addition to the talents of the incoming freshmen, Richmond returns two-time A-10 Midfielder of the Year and top team point leader Mary Flowers. Flowers, a two-time All American, led the nation and league in ground balls per game (4.14) and also was tops in the A-10 in points (65) and draw controls (3.79). Fellow All-American and A-10 first teamer Taylor Blazer returns to anchor the Spider defense.
