09/12/2011 | Women's Soccer
Jensen Smith scored the game's only goal in the 23rd minute, as Richmond beat Liberty, 1-0, Sunday evening at Robins Stadium.
Smith received a feed from Becca Wann and Lindsay Wicher off a flick pass, and shot the close range goal in from the left side.
Richmond dominated the shot category, 28-7, marking a season-high for the Spiders. Richmond outshot Liberty, 17-1 in the first frame and continued the dominance by an 11-6 margin in the last half.
The Spiders also won the corners, 8-2 and Melissa Pacheco had three saves in goal. Pacheco registered a clutch save, blocking a penalty kick by the Flames in the game's 75th minute. Liberty's Laura Nyholt tried the equalizer, kicking to her left, as Pacheco guessed correctly and saved the attempt with a full-out save.
Richmond has won two-straight and remain undefeated at home.
The Spiders play the next seven contests on the road before returning to Robins Stadium Oct. 14.
Richmond participates in the UNC-Wilmington Invitational this weekend with a Friday contest against Western Carolina and then concluding action with North Florida Sunday.
