09/13/2011 | Women's Basketball
Rutgers head women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer is set to speak at the Modlin Center for the Arts Sept. 22 as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum Game Changers: How Women Lead and Change the World speaking lecture. Stringer's lecture, Reflections On and Off the Court, is the first of four Jepson Leadership Forum events.
Named one of Sports Illustrated magazine's "101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports," C. Vivian Stringer is one of the most recognized and celebrated coaches in the game of basketball. With a career spanning nearly four decades, Stringer is ranked third in all-time wins in collegiate women's basketball history, second among active head coaches. She is a three-time national coach of the year honoree and is the eighth collegiate basketball coach in history to join the elite 800-win club.
She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 along with NBA greats Michael Jordan, David Robinson and John Stockton, and Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.
In 2008, Nike honored her by dedicating the C. Vivian Stringer Child Development Center at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
A coal miner's daughter, she learned a valuable lesson from her parents: "Work hard and don't look for excuses, and you can achieve anything." Through it all, she has worked to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of young women. Her memoir, Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph, is a New York Times best seller.
A reception and book signing will immediately follow the lecture.Tickets are FREE but required and open to the public two weeks before the event. For more information, please visit this link.
