09/18/2011 | Women's Soccer
Richmond defeated North Florida, 2-1, Sunday afternoon to clinch the Hilton Garden Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.
Richmond overpowered Western Carolina, 4-1, Friday night to put itself in position to win the crown Sunday.
Kristin Lescalleet, Natalie LeClair, Ashley Williams and Erin Layne all garnered All-Tournament recognition, while two-time A-10 Player of the Week Becca Wann was named the Most Outstanding Player.
"We had a really strong performance today against a good North Florida team," said head coach Peter Albright. "I was very impressed with our passing ability, as we really controlled the game. LeClair was terrific, as was Layne. It was a very good game all-around and it feels great to win a tournament."
Wann scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season off a LeClair pass 16 minutes into the contest. Wann headed the ball off a cross pass from the right side. Layne would add another tally in the 32nd minute after another LeClair pass, aided by Emily Dale off a corner kick.
North Florida would add its score in the 80th minute.
Richmond jumpstarted the streak with a thrilling win over No. 21 William & Mary last week at Robins Stadium. Richmond improves to 5-3-2 on the year.
The Spiders outshot North Florida, 11-9, led by Wann's five shots. Melissa Pacheco had five saves in goal.
