Spiders Win Fifth Straight, Shut Out American
09/24/2011 | Women's Soccer
Richmond ended its non-conference slate with a 2-0 victory over American Saturday.
The Spiders have won a season-high five in a row, jumpstarted by a victory over No. 21 William & Mary Sept. 8.
Two-time A-10 Player of the Week Becca Wann had the Spiders' first tally six minutes into the game when she fired home a free kick just outside the goal box.
Wann has a conference and team-leading nine goals on the season, and ranks 17th nationally in overall points. Wann has also scored six of Richmond's last 10 goals.
Senior Liza Koch provided the insurance in the game's 46th minute when she received a Natalie LeClair pass and shot from the right side into the top of goal.
Richmond out-shot American, 14-8, led by Wann's four shots. LeighAnne Baxter followed with three shots. Richmond had the advantage in corners by a 6-2 margin.
Andrea Young recorded the shutout with three saves.
Richmond begins conference play at Duquesne Friday at 7 p.m.
