Spider Trio Set for Junior Mountain Running Worlds
09/08/2011 | Cross Country
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - University of Richmond cross country runners Ryan Lee (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy), Billy Fayette (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale) and Clare Moretz (Madison, Va./Madison) are set to race in Sunday's World Junior Mountain Running Championships in Tirana, Albania. The Spider trio will compete as part of the USA Junior Mountain Running Team at the 27th annual running of the event.
"We are excited for Ryan, Billy and Clare," said head men's coach Steve Taylor. "We look forward to their updates from Albania. It's going to be a tough course with tough race conditions, but they have worked hard over the summer and early part of the cross country season to prepare for the race. It's nearly time for them to put that training into action as part of Team USA!"
Taylor will track the trio's next three days of preparation and provide personal updates from the runners on his blog. Lee was the first to get in touch with Taylor upon their arrival across the pond, saying, "We arrived at the hotel about 15 minutes ago, which is right on the ocean. Although our room is small, it has a balcony with an ocean view. I'm going for a run now with Billy and Jared, one of the seniors on the team."
"Your athletes arrived tired but are otherwise good," said U.S. Junior Team Leader Paul Kirsh in a message to Taylor. "All three of them seem serious and focused already, I can tell. I think they will have a good advantage on weather. It's going to be 90s on race day. Some of us got to see the course today, and it's pretty steep in some sections. It's very, very dusty but has a good fast downhill except for one technical section. The whole team will get to run on the course tomorrow. We also scheduled a side trip to the U.S. Embassy tomorrow, which should be another good cultural experience as well."
The Spider trio is the latest in a long line of Richmond distance runners to represent the United States at the World Championships, with Moretz qualifying as the first women's runner in program history on the team. The race will include athletes from 36 countries and be held in the mountains outside of Tirana, the capitol city of Albania.
