Jan. 2, 2012: Colder Weather, Shared Compliments and Some Super Competitive Bingo
Today was our first chilly day in Sarasota, but at least the pool was warm! It was also my training buddy Lexi's birthday. We celebrated this morning by sharing the side lane and doing a distance set with snorkel and paddles. We traded places a few times, but I think we both ended up doing pretty well.
Most of our teammates did a 200 stroke set, and I heard in our meeting tonight that some of our freshman were killing it! Matt gave the seniors an assignment to bring a compliment for anyone in the group to encourage us to be aware of each other during practice. Many commented on Meredith's stellar breaststroke this morning as well as Allison's two great butterfly practices. A few others commented on Mina's great underwaters during her dive 75s dive the other day and that Paige has been doing extremely well in practice.
This afternoon we focused on speed again. We all did 12 repetitions of either a 100 or 50 stroke fast. I think one of the best parts of this practice was how vocal we were as a group. When sets get tough, it is incredibly helpful to have your teammates cheering for you.
Now for the fun stuff! Tonight we had a short meeting and then played some bingo with Travis as the caller. It's kind of pathetic how competitive we are even in a game of bingo. Liz and Mariel ended up splitting 12 cards and managed to win the last round.
Bingo also allowed us to learn some fun facts about Travis, like his favorite vitamin is B12 and he has a slight Nebraskan accent that shines through when he calls out the O's. When Travis took a few of us to the grocery store later, we also learned that he got in his first car accident because he was eating fruit snacks. He also likes to shop at Marshalls.
As for our condo, we had a fantastic dinner prepared by Jill, who tapped into her Italian roots to cook up a pasta dish with chicken, tomatoes, zucchini and some other veggies. There is a slight concern running through Chez Gangster, however, because both Allison and Jill woke up screaming the night before last. This has never happened to either of them, which leads us to believe that our condo could very well be haunted. With Allison's multiple close encounters with ghosts, there is good reason to be scared.
We are going to face the cold in the morning and hopefully have another good day. A shout-out to the Coast Guard men's swim team for reading the blog! Sorry for broadcasting one of your poop comments...
