UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Five Spiders finished in double figures and senior Darrius Garrett tied a single-season program record with 77 blocks as Richmond rolled to a 102-58 rout of Fordham behind a season-high and Robins Center record 16 three-pointers on Wednesday.
Richmond became the first Division I school to have at least 100 points, 30 assists and 6 or fewer turnovers in a conference game since the 1999-00 season. The last team to do it was Michigan State on March 4, 2000 against Michigan in a Big Ten game. The Spartans went on to win the national championship that season.
Sophomore Cedrick Lindsay provided an early spark for the Spiders. The D.C. native put Richmond up, 9-5, at the 15:42 mark after converting the old-fashioned three-point play on freshman Devon McMillan's foul and would cap a personal 8-0 run over the ensuing two minutes with a trey at the top of the key.
After freshman Kendall Anthony drained the first of his five treys with just under 2:00 remaining in the half, Lindsay would combine with classmate Derrick Williams to score the final 10 points down the stretch to afford the Spiders a comfortable 46-28 lead at intermission.
Following a foul on the perimeter by rookie Bryan Smith, junior Darien Brothers opened the second half by nailing three shots at the line before heating up for consecutive treys just four minutes later. Junior Greg Robbins would follow Lindsay's first-half lead and score eight straight points to continue the Spider momentum midway through the half.
Anthony would take over the rest of the way, putting away four treys over the next eight minutes before exiting the game with the Spiders up, 92-52, with four minutes remaining.
After senior Zak Estes hit a layup with just over a minute to play, the clambering Robins Center crowd rose to its feet in anticipation of the Spiders reaching the ever-elusive century mark. They would not have to wait long, however, as junior Liam Billings delivered a trey from well behind the arc at the 0:28 mark to send the Spiders into triple digits for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Brothers finished the night with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including a 4-for-10 clip from long range, while also handing out four assists in the win.
Anthony added 17 points on an efficient 5-of-7 outing from behind the arc, while sophomore Derrick Williams followed close behind with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting to go with seven rebounds.
Senior Josh Duinker buried both his treys on his way to 11 points to go with a career-high five assists, while Lindsay finished with 10 tallies and five helpers of his own. Robbins came up just shy of double figures with eight points on a night when Richmond got 49 points from its bench. His seven boards also marked a career-high.
Richmond (12-9, 3-3 A-10) went 36-for-64 (56.3%) from the floor and buried a record 16 of its 33 (48.5%) three-point attempts while finishing 14-of-17 (82.4%) at the line. The Spiders equaled a season-low with six turnovers and bettered their season-high in assists by 11 to finish the night with 30 dishes, just one shy of a program record. Richmond would force the Rams into 15 turnovers on the night, scoring 19 points off their opponent's giveaways.
Fordham (8-11, 1-5 A-10) was held to 20-of-56 (35.7%) shooting which included a dismal 2-for-15 showing from long range. The Rams were led by junior Chris Gaston's 22 points and 11 rebounds with sophomore Branden Frazier representing the only other Ram in double figures with his 11 tallies in the losing effort.
The Spiders return to the road this weekend when they visit St. Bonaventure on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip.
