Jan. 6, 2012: Racing Rhody and Our Last Night in Town
We had our meet with Rhode Island today and had fun getting to know our fellow A-10 conference members. We spent a long time at the pool, but at least we only had to go once. I especially loved getting to joke around with my friend, Caitlin, who I've swum with for years and worked with this summer.
Our group got to the pool around 9:45 a.m., activated and worked on core strength until 10:30. We practiced until our "meet" started at Noon. For the meet, some people did three 200s then three 100s, some did three 100s and three 50s and a few others did six 100s.
Overall, we did a good job, but there were definitely a few standouts. Alexi did a fantastic job in her 200s and 100s free, and Charlotte was dropping some impressive 100 and 50 times. It also made my day to watch Paige swim a great 100 breast and seeing her face light up when she heard her time.
After the meet we did a long warm down and then took some underwater pictures with photographer Barany. The funniest part of the photo session was the divers trying to hold their breath underwater. At one point, I looked back and saw Carinne and Katherine clinging to the wall and giggling. Matt had a lot of issues with the underwater camera and kept having to take test shots, so Allison and I took the opportunity to be a little ridiculous. We had a staring contest during one picture and then aggressively shook hands in another.
While Matt continued to fool around with the camera, Allison practiced the synchronized swimming moves she learned from Anna. In the process, she somehow ended up in a lap-swimming lane and collided with an older man. Both of them were visibly frazzled, but the man was able to forgive Allison and continue his laps.
After a long day at the pool, we returned to the condo, made ourselves lunch and then hit the beach. The Rhode Island team was also there, and my friend Caitlin introduced me to her friends.
At sunset, we assembled for some artsy pictures by the water. Lauren and I even got a roomie picture with her holding me! I can't wait to see that one. Surprisingly, we even had some paparazzi stop by the photos shoot. A random lady was running around us and snapping pictures while we posed. The whole thing was a little weird, and it has me rethinking my celebrity ambitions.
We ate leftovers for dinner, and then Travis shuttled us over to Big Oläf for ice cream. Now we're just relaxing in the condo and doing a little packing here and there. We'll have our last practice in the morning before heading to the airport. Hopefully we will finish strong in our last long course practice!
Tomorrow I will submit my last entry. Hopefully I'll have some wise parting words to share... Well, maybe don't count on the "wise" part.
Sincerely,
Blog Master Dougie
