Jessie Krebs' Training Trip Blog: Day 10
01/08/2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Editor's Note: Sophomore Jessie Krebs will chronicle her time with Spider Swim & Dive on the team's winter training trip to Sarasota, Fla., this December and January. Below is her 10th and final entry of the trip.
Jan. 7, 2012: Dougie Signing Off
I write this from my seat on the airplane headed back to Baltimore with Meredith seated to my right. We survived training trip... Hooray!
There's hardly anyone around us, and we actually heard the flight attendant debating whether he should count a cello as a person. He came to the conclusion that if he were asked how many people were on the flight, he would say 61 human souls, a baby and a cello.
I've been able to add a few more tallies to the interesting people I've met during today's travels. Just a few hours ago, Allison, Anna, Meredith and I were eating lunch in the airport when we made friends with a little boy who was very intrigued by our mesh bags. He was convinced they belonged to Spiderman. We found him very cute until he came over and stared pinching me.
But before we began today's travels, we did do some swimming. We ended with a longer freestyle set that would hopefully help us recover from yesterday's meet. One of my favorite parts of practice was when I swam into the wall and Travis looked at me, nodded and said, "Cash money!" When I asked what the heck he was talking about, he said he was trying to bring the phrase back. Travis, I hate to break it to you, but I don't think you can ever bring a phrase "back" that was never "in".
We finished practice with a train, which is where everyone grabs on to the feet of the person in front of them and basically creates one big swimmer. The person in the front paddles and the person in the back kicks. With 19 of us, this was incredibly awkward; I can tell you this because I was the caboose and somehow ended up on top of Mina multiple times.
While attempting to create this train felt kind of silly, it was symbolic of a major lesson from our trip: By working together and focusing more on one another than on ourselves, we have built a stronger team. Having the opportunity to live with different people and learn new things about our teammates is part of what helps Spider Swim & Dive leave Sarasota a better group year after year.
I'd like to take a moment to thank the university for allowing us to have this opportunity. I know many college swimmers who do not get to go on training trips, and our team realizes we are incredibly lucky. In addition, I'd like to thank Zach Burrus, our director of public relations and the person who has been posting the blog on our website day after day. I know you're my "editor", so you better not edit this out!
Classes and practices start back up on Monday, and we realize that there is still work to do before A-10s. I believe that if we keep rolling with the momentum we've created during training trip, we're going to have an incredible remainder of the season! Thanks again for reading, and for the last time, this is Dougie signing off.
Sincerely, Jessie
P.S. - Dougie runs on Dunkin'.
