UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Derrick Williams came up just shy of a career-high with 21 points, but the Spiders suffered a 69-67 heartbreaker at the hands of George Washington on Saturday at the Robins Center.
Williams poured in 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting and a career-high 11 free throws to surpass the 20-point plateau for the second consecutive contest. Senior Francis Cedric-Martel buried 4-of-7 from the field to join him in double figures with 10 points.
As he has done throughout much of the season, Darrius Garrett led the Spiders on the defensive end. The senior skied for five blocks and a game-high 11 boards, marking the second straight game and seventh overall this season that he has reached double-figure rebounds.
After leading the majority of the night, Richmond (13-13, 4-7 A-10) would not relinquish the lead until 1:16 remaining in the game. The Spiders shot 23-for-55 (41.8%) from the floor and an impressive 14-for15 (93.3%) at the line on Saturday. Richmond edged GW on the boards, 29-28, and tallied 12 second-chance points.
GW (9-16, 4-7 A-10) finished the game shooting 27-for-49 (55.1%) and 12-for-16 (75%) at the stripe. Junior David Pellom led the Colonials with 16 points on an 8-of-9 outing from the floor, while classmates Dwayne Smith and Lasan Kromah added 14 and 11, respectively.
The Spiders continue conference play on Wednesday with a visit to St. Louis. Tip is set for 8 p.m. at the Billikens' Chaifetz Arena.
