Spiders Win At Saint Joseph's For Third-Straight Year
02/23/2012 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Derrick WIlliams scored 17 points as Richmond won at Saint Joseph's for the third-straight year 52-49 Wednesday.
With the game tied in the closing seconds, Williams was fouled with three seconds remaining and made the first free throw to put the Spiders up 50-49. He missed the second, but on the rebound Saint Joseph's called a timeout that they did not have.
Richmond won its second-striaght game and improved to 3-1 against the Atlantic 10's Philadelphia schools. The Spiders have won four of the last five meetings with Saint Joseph's and handed the Hawks (18-11, 8-6 Atlantic 10) just their third home loss in 14 games at Hagan Arena.
The Spiders held its second-straight opponent under 55 points, holding the Hawks to 38.1 percent shooting.
Williams made 6-of-11 field goals, including a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc as he continued his success against Philadelphia schools. He scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win over Temple and 22 points and 11 rebounds in the Spiders' win over La Salle.
Junior Darien Brothers scored 12 points and sophomore Cedrick Lindsay had 10 points, making two three-pointers.
Kendall Anthony scored nine points, but that did not include a clutch three-pointer he made that beat the shot clock buzzer with under four minutes to play. The baseline referee waved the three-pointer off, but video replays showed that it should have counted. NCAA rules only allow officials to review a judgement call with the clock at the end of the first half and at the end of the game.
The Spiders (15-14, 6-8 Atlantic 10) play at Xavier on ESPN2 on Saturday at 8 p.m.
