Richmond Vies For 10th A-10 Win At Charlotte Sunday

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond looks for its 10th conference win, a first under head coach Michael Shafer, Sunday at 2 p.m. at Charlotte.
The Latest:
- Richmond grinded out a 59-45 decision over Duquesne Wednesday night to conclude its home slate at the Robins Center.
- Richmond improved to 22-6, 9-4, while Duquesne fell to 19-9, 7-6. The 22 wins is the Spiders' most since 2004-05, the last time the program went to the NCAA tournament. Richmond snapped Duquesne's four-game win streak while improving to 12-2 at home. Seven other teams in program history including the 2011-12 Spiders have won 22 games or more in a season.
- The win improved Richmond to 22-6, 9-4 overall. Bye way of tiebreaker, Richmond receives the No. 4 seed in next week's 2012 Buick Atlantic 10 Tournament to be held on St. Joseph's campus at Hagan Arena. It marked the third time in four years Richmond has received the bye. The Spiders also concluded their home slate 12-2 at the Robins Center.
- The 2012 Buick Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship returns to a school's home site for the first time in three seasons. Charlotte held the 2009 A-10 Tournament at Halton Arena. The 49ers defeated the Spiders, 59-54, for the title. The top four seeds are as follows: St. Bonaventure, Temple, Dayton and Richmond. All other seeds will be determined after the completion of Sunday's games.
- Oliver leads the country with a 94 percent mark (96-102) at the foul line. Oliver went 6-for-6 in the win over Duquesne as the Spiders sunk a season-high 18-for-18 attempts. Oliver ranks fourth in three point field goals (150), fourth in games played (125), eighth in free throws (286) and ninth in field goals made (504) in program history.
- Richmond ranks first in the country in three-point field goal percentage (39.9) and second in free-throws (81 percent).
The Teams:
- Richmond trails the Charlotte series, 1-8, and recorded its only win over the 49ers Feb. 16 at the Robins Center. The Spiders won 82-64. Richmond is 1-3 at the Robins Center, 0-4 at Halton Arena and 0-2 in neutral locations.
- Richmond has been defeated twice by the 49ers in the A-10 Tournament. In 2009, both teams battled in the title game, but Charlotte came away with the 59-54 victory. Last year, the 49ers downed Richmond, 68-63, in the quarterfinals in Lowell, Mass.
Up Next:
- After Sunday's game, Richmond will prepare for the 2012 Buick Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship. The fourth-ranked Spiders will face the No. 5/12 seed in the quarterfinal round Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hagan Arena.
