Spiders Edge American For First Win Of Season
03/01/2012 | Women's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Richmond downed American, 12-11, Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
“A win is a win, we will certainly take it, said assistant coach Crista Samaras. "The girls have turned a corner and each day they look to raise their level of play. We did that in critical places today. Winning can be amazing, as it was today. But, our girls are chasing the work. So, tomorrow, we work.”
American got on the board first, taking a 2-0 advantage until Richmond countered with Mary Flowers and Kara Moschetti unassisted tallies to even the score.
From there, the contest was back-and-forth with each team scoring in response to the other. A Flowers free position cut the Richmond deficit to 6-5 at the break.
The game continued to be score-for-score until Richmond's Caitlin Fifield lasered two back-to-back goals to knot the score at 8-all with 15:40 remaining. American would respond, but the Spiders took the lead with consecutive scores by way of Fifield and Hayley Ross.
American scored the equalizer to put the game at 10-10 with 8:50 left, but Richmond scored two more goals to reclaim the lead at 12-10. American notched a goal with a minute left, but it would prove to not be enough.
“Mary Flowers is one of the nation's best because she makes it count when it counts," said Samaras. On a half a dozen occasions, Mary made the difference – always in small places that have a huge impact in our favor. Freshman Emily Boyce debuted in goal today and made huge saves at key moments. She was fantastic!”
Richmond was led by Fifield's hat trick, followed by two goals from Flowers, Moschetti, Sam Stevenson and Hayley Ross. Emily Doyle added a tally.
Flowers dished a team-high two assists, while Moschetti added one.
Richmond outshot American, 29-27, and won the draw 12-10. The Spiders were a perfect 12-for-12 on clears. Goalkeeper Emily Boyce recorded five saves.
Richmond resumes action at ODU Mar. 7 at 4 p.m.
