Spiders' Second-Half Rally At No. 18 Towson Falls Short

TOWSON, Md. -- Richmond staged a second-half rally but fell at No. 18 Towson, 13-12, Saturday afternoon.
The Spiders fell to 3-5, while Towson improved to 5-2.
The Spiders were down 8-4 at the half, and had its deficit pushed to 9-4 after a quick Tiger goal to start the last frame. Caitlin Fifield responded with a tally, courtesy of a Sam Stevenson pass to cut the lead to 9-5. After another Tiger goal, Richmond launched three consecutive goals to get to within 10-8 with 12:23 remaining.
Towson responded with a score, but not before Richmond countered to slash the lead to 11-9. Towson closed the game with two more goals to Richmond's three tallies to edge the Spiders, 13-12.
Richmond closed the game with the contest's last three scores, two of which came by the stick of Tewaarton Watch List nominee Mary Flowers. Flowers netted a free position shot with 50 seconds remaining but it would not be enough.
Flowers led Richmond with a season-high five goals and Stevenson followed with two. Five other Spiders scored one goal apiece. Stevenson led Richmond with two assists.
Flowers recorded six points, off five goals and one assist. Flowers launched nine shots, and recorded three draw controls.
Richmond outshot Towson, 29-28, and won the ground ball edge, 14-13. Victoria Roebuck had 11 saves between the pipes.
After playing six consecutive games on the road, Richmond returns to Robins Stadium Wednesday, Mar. 21 to host instate rival, William & Mary at 7 p.m.
