UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision to the visiting Northeastern Huskies at Pitt Field on Sunday. With the loss, the Spiders fall to 13-8 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 11-7 on the year.
Senior Chris Cowell, senior Bryan Conway, and redshirt junior Matt Zink paced the Spider offense, with each clubbing a pair of hits. Redshirt junior Ryan Mallory collected the only RBI on the day for Richmond with a single in the eighth. Taking the loss on the mound was freshman Ryan Cook (2-1).
Northeastern took early control of the contest with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Huskies then added to their lead with runs in the second, third, and sixth innings. The story of the day for the Spiders was missed opportunities, as Richmond left runners on base in seven of the game's nine innings.
Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the eight, the Spiders appeared to be staging a rally, loading the bases with no outs. But a Richmond double play got the Huskies out of big trouble, allowing one run to score to get two outs. With a runner on third, Mallory delivered a RBI single to center, but that's all the Spider would manage in the eight.
In the ninth, the Huskies answered right back in the top of the frame with two more runs, making the Spider deficit 8-2. In the bottom half, Richmond got a man on but was unable to start a comeback, falling to Northeastern, 8-2.
The Spiders will conclude their season-long, 11-game home stand this Tuesday when Richmond will play host to in-state rival William and Mary. First pitch at Pitt Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
