Richmond's Mayers Earns Multiple Weekly Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Coming off a tremendous week for the Richmond Spiders, junior Jacob Mayers was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger. The honors are the first this season for the Mechanicsville, Virginia native.
"It's a great honor for Jake and our program as a whole," Richmond head baseball coach Mark McQueen said. "Jake has worked extremely hard not only this season but his whole career and he expects to have success when he steps onto the field."
For the week, Mayers went 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate with four home runs, 13 RBIs, six runs scored, and also drew five walks. The junior posted an on-base percentage of .632 and recorded a slugging percentage of 1.500. Mayers was also impressive on the mound, earning the win for the Spiders in its first game against Saint Peter's. Mayers tossed seven innings, striking out eight in improving his record on the season to 2-1.
Making Mayers' week even more impressive was his consistency. Mayers hit a homer in each game and drove in at least three runs in each win for the Spiders. Mayers best game of the week came against Saint Peter's - a game which he started on the mound. Mayers went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run, scoring three runs.
On the season, Mayers leads the team and the Atlantic 10 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs. The junior also leads the Spiders with a 2-1 record, striking out a team-high 18 batters in 17 innings pitched.
