Spider Baseball Falls on the Road to W&M

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team dropped a midweek road game at William and Mary on Tuesday night, 17-4. With the setback, Richmond falls to 16-14 on the season while the Tribe improves to 23-13.
Tallying RBI hits on the day for Richmond were senior Chris Cowell, senior Robby Massar, and redshirt junior Ryan Mallory. Along with Massar, redshirt junior Adam McConnell and junior Jacob Mayers each had two hits on the night for the Spiders. On the mound, sophomore Andrew Brockett took the loss for the Spiders.
After William and Mary was able to score 14 runs in the first three innings on Tuesday night, the Spiders got on the board in the top of the fourth. After back-to-back singles from McConnell and Mayers and a fielding error, runners were on second and third for Cowell. Swinging at the first pitch, Cowell just missed a home run and instead settled for a sacrifice fly, plating a Richmond run.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Spiders got back on the scoreboard. After the first two batters reached after getting hit by pitches, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third with one away. Pinch-hitting, Mallory slapped a single to right field, scoring Cowell. After senior Bryan Conway scored on a passed ball, Massar drove in Mallory with a single to center field, making the score 17-4 in favor of W&M.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will return home to Pitt Field this weekend to play host to Atlantic 10 conference rival George Washington. The three-game series gets underway this Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
