UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spiders football team held its third scrimmage of the fall on Wednesday night in front of a strong showing of fans at Robins Stadium. Dressed in full uniform, the Spiders held a scripted scrimmage for nearly two hours. Richmond will return to the practice field on Thursday morning at 8:45 a.m.
Scrimmage Highlights
- First Half
- Newly named starting QB John Laub showed great mobility,
gaining 40 yards on four-called quarterback rushes.
- Tallying scores in the first half, were senior RB Kendall Gaskins (four-yard TD run) while kicker Remington Hinshaw went 2-for-2 on field goals, connecting from 20 and 33 yards out, respectively.
- Wide receivers Ben Edwards and Reggie Diggs had strong first-half showings. Edwards had five catches for 45 yards, while Diggs snagged a pair of catches for 30 yards.
- Defense was strong in the first half, coming up with three turnovers. Chris Speros, Walt Sparks and Doug Howell all had interceptions for the Spider defense.
- LB Eric Wright played well in the first half, coming up with three tackles, including a pair for losses. DL Evan Kelly and DB Mylon Blueford each had a sack.
- DB Wayne Pettus played well both on defense and special teams. The junior had a pair of pass breakups and looked dynamic on kickoff returns.
Scrimmage Highlights
- Second Half
- A more streamlined second half was highlighted by a burst
of Gaskins' three-yard run into the end zone for a touchdown.
- Laub continued to impress, especially in the run game. He connected with Edwards for a couple nice passes along the sideline.
- On the defensive end, Cole Gonet and Kerry Wynn tackled for losses in the backfield. Gonet and T.J. Dobrucky also had pass breakups.
- Joey Landess recorded a sack late in the second half.
