UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond exploded for three first-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over Villanova Friday at Robins Stadium.
Villanova struck first with a tally within the first minute of play as Caitlin Forte shot from 15 feet out off an assist from Hiedi Sabatura.
The Spiders recomposed themselves and countered with a Violet Miller unassisted goal in the 26th minute. The goal was the first of Miller's career.
Nine minutes later, the Spiders struck again when freshman Dana Bernetich flicked in a deflection off a corner kick by way of a Kristin Lescalleet assist. Richmond scored its third goal of the game when Natalie LeClair dribbled up the field uncontested and struck a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
The three goals scored by the Spiders was a season-high and the win was Richmond's first of the season. Richmond dominated the first-half shot total by a 11-5 margin and edged the Wildcats for the game at 15-13.
Richmond had four corners to Villanova's two and Andrea Young had six saves in the net. Bernetich was impressive at the back position as was Emily Parisi as they thwarted nearly every Villanova counter for a goal.
The Spiders were led by LeClair and Kristen Lybert's three shots apiece.
Richmond improves to 1-4-0 and will play in the Virginia Tournament next weekend in Charlottesville. The Spiders square off against James Madison, Sep. 7 at 5:00 p.m.
