The Game
- Under first year head coach Danny Rocco, the Richmond
Spiders football team evened its season record at 1-1 with a convincing, 41-8,
win over Gardner-Webb last Saturday. The
game, which was delayed 83 minutes due to weather, was the first win for
Richmond in the Rocco Era.
- The Spiders will be looking for their 10th-straight win over the Keydets on Saturday. Last season, Richmond defeated VMI, 34-19, at Robins Stadium.
- Redshirt senior QB John Laub will look to continue his strong play to start the season. After setting career-highs in a season-opening loss to Virginia, Laub re-set those marks last week. Laub completed 14-of-24 passes for a career-best 267 yards and a career-high two touchdown passes. The Coplay, Pa., native hit WR Ben Edwards for a 46-yard touchdown and FB Kendall Gaskins on a 5-yard score.
Quick Slants
- Richmond head coach Danny Rocco brings a 6-0 record
against VMI in to Saturday's contest. As the head coach at Liberty, Rocco won
all six contests against his former Big South conference rivals.
- Richmond will look to keep its unblemished record against non-conference, FCS opponents in tact against the Keydets on Saturday. The Spiders are 15-0 against those teams dating back to the 2005 season.
- Redshirt junior Jovan Smith (pictured) had a great day running the ball for Richmond against Gardner-Webb. Smith ran the ball 11 times for 94 yards, including a career-long 54 yard effort.
- Senior captain Cooper Taylor made his 2012 debut for the Spiders against GWU, totaling four tackles, one TFL, and one pass break-up. Taylor was named to the 2013 Senior Bowl Watch List prior to the start of the season.
- Redshirt sophomore Stephen Barnette led a corps of eight Spider receivers that caught at least one pass against the Runnin' Bulldogs. Barnette caught four balls for a game-high 74 yards.
Rocco Looks to
Maintain Spotless Record vs. VMI
Richmond head coach Danny Rocco will look to keep his
spotless record against VMI in tact this weekend in Lexington. As head coach at Liberty, Rocco won all six
of his contests against the Keydets.
Last week, Rocco and the Spiders defeated another old Big South foe at
Robins Stadium, besting Gardner-Webb, 41-8.
Richmond Claims 500th
Win in Program History
With its 41-8 victory over Gardner-Webb on September 8 at
Robins Stadium, the Richmond Spiders football team won its 500th game in
program history. In 129 seasons of
football, the Spiders have posted an overall record of 500-616-53.
Gaskins Makes His Way
Up the Record Book
After scoring four touchdowns in the Spiders' 41-8 win over
GWU on September 8, senior FB Kendall Gaskins moved up three spots on
Richmond's all-time touchdown list. With
27 career scores, Gaskins sits alone in fourth place in school history. Tim Hightower holds the record with 39 career
touchdowns. Gaskins also shares the FCS lead in points heading into the weekend with five TDS and 30 points.
Laub Carves Up
Gardner-Webb
After starting the season with career bests against
Virginia, redshirt senior John Laub eclipsed those numbers in Richmond's win
over Gardner-Webb. In the 41-8 victory,
Laub completed 14-of-24 passes for a career-high 267 yards and career-best two
touchdowns. Laub connected on a 46-yard
score with junior WR Ben Edwards and a 5-yard TD to FB Kendall Gaskins.
Hinshaw Has Big Night
Against GWU
Sophomore placekicker Remington Hinshaw had a career-night
in the Spiders' 41-8 win over Gardner-Webb on September 8. Hinshaw connected on a pair of field goals,
including a career-long 37-yard effort.
Hinshaw also converted all five of his extra points to account for 11
points, tying him for 10th most in school history.
Non-League Brilliance
Richmond has not lost a non-conference FCS game in the
regular season since 2005 and is a spotless 15-0 since then. The last regular
season FCS loss was at Lafayette, 7-0, in 2005. Including the Spiders' annual
game versus an FBS opponent, Richmond's non-conference regular-season record
since 2007 is 12-3 (that includes wins at Duke in 2009 and 2011).
Magic Number is 30
The Spiders are 38-4 since 2005 when scoring 30+ points (1-0
in 2012). The only four setbacks over the last five seasons when scoring 30+
came to Appalachian State in the 2007 NCAA Semifinals, 55-35, to then-No. 1
James Madison, 38-31, in 2008, to App State in the 2009 Quarterfinals, 35-31,
and to New Hampshire, 45-43, in 2011.
Lights Out When Leading at the Half
Richmond is 49-5 since the start of 2004 when leading at the
half. (1-0 in 2012). The four setbacks came in 2006 at No. 1 UNH, in 2004
versus No. 12 Maine, in 2008 versus No. 1 James Madison, to No. 5 Appalachian
State in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2010 and to No. 9 Maine in 2011.
Spiders Extend Home Opener Streak to Seven
With its 41-8 win over Gardner-Webb on September 8, the
Richmond Spiders extended their home-opener win streak to seven. During the streak, Richmond has defeated four
Big South teams (Elon, VMI, Wagner and Gardner-Webb). At Robins Stadium, the Spiders are 3-0 in
home openers, winning by an average margin of 18 points.
Richmond Undefeated in Night Games at Robins Stadium
In its three night games at Robins Stadium, the Spiders have
posted an undefeated mark of 3-0. This
season, Richmond routed Gardner-Webb, 41-8, on September 8. . In 2011, Richmond defeated Wagner, 21-6, in
the first night game at Robins Stadium before taking down VMI, 34-19, the
following week.
