Postgame Quotes: ODU 45, Richmond 37
Richmond Head Coach
Danny Rocco
Opening statement:
"I am very disappointed in the fact that we did not get off
to a better start. Offensively, in the first half, we played against a very
inspired Old Dominion defense. We made
some throws in the first half but we really had no legitimate fortune in
running the football, which was a disappointment to me. It was a tale of two
halves. During the second half, I
thought our guys made a legitimate run and I thought we put ourselves back in
the game. In theory, we were a play away
from having a chance to even the score.
There is some positive to that but it doesn't diminish or erase the
feeling you have at halftime. It is a humbling game and that's the nature of
college football. I give coach Bobby a
lot of credit. His guys played hard,
they were physical and they came to play.
You guys know better than me that this quarterback, for them, is
special. He has got great touch, great presence and he was very, very difficult
to get on the ground. My guys fought hard and got back into it. I preached all week long that we were going
to win this thing at the end. We all
talked about one more play, one more first down, one more three and out, one
more stop on defense, and things started to move in that direction at the end.
John [Laub] was really on in the second half. Doug Howell's interception and
run back for a touchdown was probably the single biggest play of the game from
our perspective. Ben [Edwards] has some
big plays during the second half also.
The short of it is that we got a conference loss to a very, very good
football team and we have to come together and move forward."
Junior wide receiver
Ben Edwards
What to take away from
today's loss:
"I think the most important thing that Coach Rocco mentioned
after the game is that when we want to be really good, we can be really good. I
think that is the most important thing that we take away from today. This offense is maturing. I know for the defense it was not the best day
that they have had, but I have all the respect in the world for our
defense. The message for this week is
that we have to move on. Tomorrow is a
new day and we have to prepare for Villanova."
Redshirt senior
defensive back Doug Howell
Speed of the ODU
offense:
"We got what we expected.
We had prepared for that kind of high-paced tempo all week. We couldn't deal with it in the first half
but we were able to adjust and get more acclimated to it in the second half. We
tried to force turnovers to get the ball back to our offense because they were
picking up the slack for where we were lacking. Special teams came up big in
points, offense came up big in points and defense came up big in points, but we
just need to play more complete games to get the win."
Old Dominion Head
Coach Bobby Wilder
Opening statement:
"I'm excited that we won the game but I'm disappointed with
how it finished. All due respect to
Richmond, because Richmond did an excellent job, particularly in the fourth
quarter, but to be in control of a game 45-17 and then to be in a situation
where there is 6:40 left and it's 45-37, it shouldn't have gotten to that
point. That was an Old Dominion issue to allow this thing to get to a one score
game. I am excited to get the win and I respect Danny Rocco and Richmond and
what they are trying to do as a program."
Sophomore quarterback
Taylor Heinicke
Comparing halves:
"I believe we just didn't keep being aggressive. We kind of
lied down with the lead and that is something we are going to have to work on."
