UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond women's soccer team downed St. Bonaventure, 2-1, Saturday night at Robins Stadium.
“We played poised on the ball for the majority of the night,” said head coach Peter Albright. "Sam Cicconi's goal was a really nice header from a great pass from Darian Podmajersky. Jensen's goal gave us the boost we needed to stay in control. It was a great win against a good team in less than ideal conditions.”
The Spiders (4-7-2, 1-2-0) got on the board when Cicconi headed a ball into the goal from close range off a cross pass from Podmajersky at the 40:45 mark. It was the first goal of Cicconi's career.
Jensen Smith would add the insurance score when she scored off a rebound shot from Shannon Colligan in the box at the 64:08 mark. The goal was Smith's second of the season.
The Bonnies (3-8-1, 0-3-0) made things interesting when they scored in the game's 68th minute after Alyssa Lapp scored inside the box after a shot was deflected.
Richmond's strong play from its back line kept the Bonnies at bay the rest of the game.
The Spiders outshot St. Bonaventure, 21-10, led by Kristen Lybert's five attempts. Ashley Riefner added three shots.
Emily Kelly had four saves in goal.
Richmond travels to George Mason Saturday, Oct. 19 for a 7 p.m. game.
