FAIRFAX, Va. – Shannon Colligan scored in the 109th minute of double overtime to beat George Mason, 2-1, Saturday in Fairfax.
“A great performance by the Spiders tonight,” said head coach Peter Albright. “We created about eight really good chances and I felt we earned the win. Crystal Koczot was instrumental in establishing offensive confidence from the back. Kristen Lybert was sharp at the top of the midfield. Shannon Colligan's overtime goal capped her best game as a Spider. This one felt really good for us.”
The win improved the Spiders to 5-7-2 overall, 2-2 in league action. Richmond moves into a tie for sixth place in the conference standings. Additionally, the Spiders snapped Mason's three-game win-streak.
Colligan scored the game winner at the 109:19 mark when senior Erin Layne fed a service pass to the far post that beat the Patriots keeper. It was Colligan's second goal of the season.
Darian Podmajersky gave Richmond the early 1-0 lead when she scored off a header from a Kaleigh Kurtz corner kick in the 50th minute.
George Mason (6-8-1, 3-2-0) added the equalizer in the 82nd minute when Emma Starr scored off a cross pass from Brenna Connell.
The Spiders outshot George Mason, 22-11, with Colligan, Layne and Podmajersky each recording four shots. Richmond won the corner advantage by an impressive, 7-1, and Emily Kelly had three saves in goal.
Richmond returns to Robins Stadium to host Duquesne for senior night Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Five Spider seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
