UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond women's basketball team was selected to finish sixth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in a vote conducted by the league's head coaches Tuesday.
Senior Kristina King, Richmond's top returning scorer, was named to the preseason All-Conference second team while Genevieve Okoro and Becca Wann received preseason third team honors.
Richmond returns two starters and 11 letterwinners from last year's 16-win squad. The Spiders are also coming off their fifth-straight postseason appearance. Starters returning include Kristina King and Bria Powell. Genevieve Okoro is expected to return following a season-ending injury last season.
King posted an impressive junior campaign, leading Richmond with 24 double-figure performances and four 20-point or better games. King scored a career-high 29 points against rival James Madison last December and led Richmond in points (419), steals (63) and free throws (103). Her 82.4 percent clip from the charity stripe was a team-best.
Okoro returns to the hardwood after sustaining an ACL tear six games into last season. Prior to the injury, Okoro dominated the frontcourt, averaging 10.3 ppg, 11.0 rpg in her first six games of the season. Okoro posted four double-doubles in those six games and was shooting a team-best 49 percent from the field. Okoro was a preseason All-Conference third team selection last season. Additionally, Okoro is only 26 rebounds away from the coveted 500-board mark.
Rounding out the Richmond accolades is two-sport star, Becca Wann. Wann finished second on the team with 19 double-figure games and scored a career-high 21 points at James Madison Dec. 2. Wann led the team with 7.9 rpg and posted a team-best five double-doubles last season. Wann was third on the team with an 11.1 ppg average and dished a team-high 93 assists last season. Wann recorded a career-high nine assists against UNCG and led the team with five games of five or more assists. Wann was also second on the team with 51 steals.
Richmond adds three freshmen to its arsenal in Dazia Hall, Olivia Healy and Janelle Hubbard. Healy, the 2013 Massachusetts Player of the Year, is one of the most decorated freshmen to come to Richmond in recent years. Healy was the Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year and the Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year. Healy led her team to a State Championship and engineered a 48-game win streak spanning two seasons. Healy is the Reading High School's all-time leading scorer at 1,897 points. Healy averaged 27.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg her senior season.
The Spiders open their 2013-14 season at Georgetown Nov. 8.
