UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team battled Massachusetts to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
“It was a really gritty performance by Richmond,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “We took the game over in the second half and did everything possible but score. Shannon Colligan was excellent and Crystal Koczot showed her quality as an all-conference level center back with her level of leadership and communication.”
Richmond (5-8-3, 2-3-1) was outshot by the Minutewomen, 18-17, but dominated the second half shot count 14-6. Ashley Riefner and Jensen Smith led Richmond recording four shot attempts each. Shannon Colligan also got in the mix adding two shots.
Riefner nearly scored in the second half with a shot that barely sailed over the center post in the 87th minute.
UMass (6-9-3, 2-4-2) recorded its first scoreless draw of the season and was led in shot attempts by Julia Weithofer's five tries.
Emily Kelly had seven saves in goal as she recorded her third shutout of the season.
Richmond will be back in action Friday, Nov. 1 when it travels to cross-town rival VCU at 7 p.m.
