RICHMOND, Va. - The resurgent Richmond soccer team downed VCU, 3-0, Friday night at Sports Backers Stadium, spoiling the Rams' Senior Night and giving the Spiders their third win in the past five games (3-1-1).
"This was a really good performance from a team that has suffered a lot of adversity,” said head soccer coach Peter Albright. “VCU was tough to crack, but Jensen Smith and Dub (Ashley Williams) were brilliant. Freshman keeper Devin O'Brien played like a senior. These kids have much to be proud of."
O'Brien made three key saves to keep the first half scoreless, then the Spiders (6-8-3, 3-3-1) exploded for three second half goals, ignited by Smith, who scored on a breakaway in the 47th minute.
Erin Layne and Ashley Williams scored insurance goals for the Spiders in the 62nd and 68th minutes. Layne's tally was assisted by Smith, while sophomore Shannon Colligan set up Williams' score. Smith and Layne led the Spiders each taking two shots.
The Rams (8-6-3, 3-2-2) kept the pressure on throughout the game tallying 16 shots, but were unable to sneak one by the freshman goalkeeper O'Brien, who recorded five saves for her second shutout of the season.
The victory moves Richmond into a tie for seventh place with Saint Joseph's (7-7-3; 3-3-1) in the Atlantic 10 standings, heading into the regular season finale at George Washington Sunday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. The Colonials (6-5-5; 2-3-2) are tied for tenth. The top eight teams qualify for the A-10 Tournament, to be held in Richmond at Sports Backers Stadium Nov. 7-10.
