UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond women's basketball team fell to the UAB Blazers, 53-49, in the final minute Sunday afternoon in the Spider's home opener at the newly renovated Robins Center. Freshman Olivia Healy led the Spiders with 19 points, four rebounds and four steals.
The loss drops Richmond to 1-2 on the season, while the Blazers improved to 2-2 overall.
Healy was the lone Spider in double figures, but Genevieve Okoro, Liz Brown and Keri Soppe all added seven points apiece, while Brown tallied a game-high nine rebounds.
The game was very close throughout both halves as it consisted of 22 lead changes with nine ties and neither team led by more than six points.
Richmond had the two-point lead with 3:04 on the clock but UBA scored two free throws and a layup to take the 51-49 lead with 15 seconds play. The Spiders eagerly searched for a basket but all four shots fell short as time ran out.
Richmond will return to the court Thursday night when they host the James Madison Dukes at 7 p.m. The game will be locally televised on CBS 6.3.
