Swimming & Diving Split At East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Richmond swimming and diving program downed Limestone, 233-60, Saturday in dual meet action at the Minges Aquatic Center. The Spiders fell to host East Carolina, 176-114.
The Spiders posted 30 top five finishes, including three event titles. Katherine Cook won the 1-meter event, Meredith Gouger won the 400 IM (4:36.47) and the Spiders captured the 200 freestyle relay.
Mali Kobelja put in solid performances for Richmond as she placed second in three individual races as well as helping the 400 medley relay team place third. The senior clocked a 1:06.12 in the 100 breaststroke, a 2:22.84 in the 200 breaststroke and a 57.89 in the 100 butterfly. Maggie Pope, Kelley Yang and Natalya Ares joined her in the 400 medley relay that recorded a time of 3:55.62.
The 400 IM was a huge event for the Spiders. In addition to Gouger's title, Erin Brady touched the wall second with a time of 4:37.86, while Mariel Kush followed in third with a time of 4:40.24. Taylor Johnson picked up a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:41.89.
The 500 freestyle featured four Spiders in the top five. Emma Terwilliger clocked a 5:11.01 for a second-place finish, while Allison Titley followed in third place with a time of 5:14.36. Molly McSweeney and Melissa Ross took fourth and fifth, respectively.
In addition to Cook's 1-meter title, Irina Chiulli recorded in second-place performances on the springboards. The freshman scored a 241.88 on the 1-meter and posted a 270.38 score on the 3-meter event.
Richmond will jump back into the pool next Saturday, Nov. 9 when it hosts the Liberty Flames at the Robins Center Natatorium. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be streamed live by SpiderTV.
