UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Sophomore Terry Allen led Richmond with 16 points and senior Cedrick Lindsay scored his 1,000th career point as the Spiders defeated Fairfield 68-47 in the Hall of Fame Tipoff at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
A day after giving No. 19 ranked North Carolina all it could handle - and after seeing the Tarheels defeat No. 2 ranked Louisville earlier Sunday afternoon - the Spiders jumped out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back against the Stags.
"I'm most pleased with our energy and how we responded to the situation," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "We really felt that we were very close in the game yesterday. It's natural to feel disappointed, we'd rather be playing against Louisvlle. I thought we really handled that well."
The Spiders led by 26 (66-40) with three minutes remaiining as they improved to 4-2 on the season with their only losses coming to UNC and Minnesota.
Lindsay, coming off a career high 29 points on Saturday against UNC, needed just three points to reach 1,000 for his career and he wasted no time in accomplishing the feat. He drained a three-pointer for the Spiders' first basket of the game, and then let his teammates do most of the scoring for the rest of the afternoon. Lindsay finished with seven points and currently sits 41st on Richmond's scoring list, having passed Johnathan Baker (1,002).
Lindsay was named to the Hall of Fame Tipoff All-Tournament Team.
Allen made 6-of-9 field goals as as he tied his season high and scored in double-figures for the third time in five games.
Freshman ShawnDre' Jones scored in double-figures for the first time in his collegiate career with 11 points. Senior Derrick Williams also scored 11, while sophomore Alonzo Nelson-Ododa had nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Spiders return to Richmond tonight, but will head west tomorrow for a Wednesday match-up with Air Force in Colorado Springs, Col. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.
