GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Richmond women's basketball team fell to the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 69-60, Sunday afternoon at the Corbett Sports Center.
Despite having three Spiders in double figures, Richmond (1-4) shot 33.9 percent from the field, while the North Carolina A&T (4-1) shot 46.8 percent with the help of 32 points in the paint.
“I felt like the game started with both teams kind of feeling each other out and then we had a few turnovers and gave up a couple second-chance points that gave them the opportunity to get a little bit of a cushion,” commented Richmond head coach Michael Shafer. “Once they got that cushion they started feeling a little bit more confident and we didn't.”
Redshirt-junior Genevieve Okoro tallied a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her 12 points for her second double-double of the season to lead the Spiders. Senior Amber Nichols scored 13 points thanks to three three-pointers, while Kristina King added 10 points of her own.
“I felt like at the end of the game we started to kind of fight back a little bit but again it was just a little to late,” added Shafer. “We should have come out ready to go from the get go. There are a lot of young people playing a lot of minutes it's still a process that we are trying to figure out. We are just going to keep working until we get it right.”
Richmond found itself down as many as 17 points with 11:07 left to play and cut the deficit to eight with a minute left but time trickled down.
The Spiders will continue on the road Wednesday, Nov. 27 when they travels to Blacksburg, Va., to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies at 4 p.m.
