UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond women's basketball team kicks off the 2013-14 season when it travels to the Georgetown Hoyas Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
THE SERIES
This is the 15th meeting between the two teams in a series dating back to Nov. 30, 1981. The Hoyas hold the all-time advantage with a 6-4 record in the last 10 showings. The Spiders and the Hoyas last met in 2010 when Richmond fell by just one point, 66-65, in Washington, D.C.
THE SPIDERS
The Spiders are coming off their fifth-straight postseason appearance as they made it to the first round of the 2013 WNIT. Richmond posted an overall record of 16-16 and went 6-8 in the A-10. The Spiders welcomed three newcomers as well as returning 11 letterwinners from last year's squad, including senior Kristina King, who averaged 13.2 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game.
THE HOYAS
The Hoyas enter the 2013-14 season with two returning starters from last year's squad that went 15-16 on the season and 5-11 in the BIG EAST. Senior Andrea White is Georgetown's top returner from a year ago as she averaged 10.4 points per game and 6.5 rebounds.
PICK-6
Richmond was tabbed to finish sixth in the A-10 in a poll conducted by the league's head coaches Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Spiders received 107 votes for sixth place. NCAA participant Dayton was selected to finish first, collecting 12 of 13 first-place votes. Defending champion Saint Joe's was tabbed to finish second, while A-10 finalist Fordham rounded out the top-3.
OKORO SET TO RETURN
The Spiders will return one of their most versatile players in Genevieve Okoro when they tip off their 2013-14 season at Georgetown Nov. 8. Okoro played only six games in her junior campaign, after suffering a torn ACL at the Wichita State game at the Cancun Classic last November. Before the injury, Okoro dazzled in the frontcourt, averaging a staggering 10.3 ppg and 11.0 rpg. Four of Okoro's first six games were double-doubles. Okoro was also a 2012 A-10 preseason selection.
