AMHERST, Mass. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to No. 12-ranked Massachusetts, 2-1, in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
Richmond's four-game winning streak was snapped and moved to 14-7 on the season. No. 12 UMass moved to 18-4 overall.
The two teams were even in shots with eight apiece, while the Spiders took the 7-3 corner advantage. Second-Team A-10 selection Taylor Deitrick led both squads with four shots and two on goal, while Amy Cooke found the back of the cage for Richmond.
The Minutewomen connected on an early goal just five minutes into the game off the first penalty corner of the day. UMass then went up 2-0 in the 14th minute, before Atlantic 10 First-Team selection Cooke responded with the Spider goal at the 16:31 mark off a corner.
The Spiders fought hard firing four shots and registering two corners in the final 35 minutes of play but could not find the back of the cage.
Three-time Atlantic 10 honoree Anna Zarkoski charted four saves on the day as she recorded all 70 minutes between the posts.
Four Spiders were named to the 2013 Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team, including Rebecca Barry, Chelsea Davies, Emma Johansson and Kerri McDonald.
